” Israelis and their American supporters claim that Israel learned its lessons well from the disastrous 2006 Lebanon war and has devised a winning strategy for the present war against Hamas. Of course, when a ceasefire comes, Israel will declare victory.
Don’t believe it. Israel has foolishly started another war it cannot win.” John Mearsheimer in the American Conservative.
Contrary to Israel’s officially stated goals, the massacre perpetrated in Gaza was not intended to stop rockets. It doesn’t require rocket science (if you excuse the pun) to understand that a military intervention, with the ludicrous and criminal disproportionality we witnessed in the last weeks would have ever achieved any tangible result. If Israel wanted by its actions to restore its deterrence, clearly it has failed despicably.
Israel seems to have lost sight and its officials look and sound conspicuously frightened to the bone about the image they are projecting now in the Arab World. Clearly the murderous campaign on Gaza has not erased the image of defeat in Lebanon during the summer of 2006, quite the contrary.
But one must always keep in mind that Isarel’s bloody and apparently reckless actions are inspired by a much sinister motive. Mearsheimer spotted that:
If Israel wanted to stop missile attacks from Gaza, it could have done so by arranging a long-term ceasefire with Hamas. And if Israel were genuinely interested in creating a viable Palestinian state, it could have worked with the national unity government to implement a meaningful ceasefire and change Hamas’s thinking about a two-state solution. But Israel has a different agenda: it is determined to employ the Iron Wall strategy to get the Palestinians in Gaza to accept their fate as hapless subjects of a Greater Israel.
There is no need for conspiracy theories here. For despite the propaganda effort, there will always be an Israeli official who doesn’t shy away from stating what the real aims are.
On the premise that God has promised Jews the land of Palestine -as if God was an estate agent- Israel is pursuing the same old ideology that brought it to existence.
Since its creation, Israel has always had the ambition of expanding over the larger space called “greater Israel” or “Biblical Palestine.”
This is based upon the Zionist belief in the principle of Bettar, “the love of the entire land of Israel… [T]he concept of a Jewish state with a Jewish Majority in its (sic) biblical homeland. The entire land of Israel as given to the Jewish people by God (sic) with it’s eternal capital Jerusalem.” The words of Vladimir (Ze’ev) Jabotinsky , the revisionist Zionist leader, a notorious terrorist who through the murderous actions of the organization he created, the Irgun, helped brutally ransack Palestinian properties, steal the land, and murder civilians. [An organisation in which, by the way, incidently, the fathers of both the current Israeli foreign (propaganda) minister, Tzipi Livni, and the future Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel served actively.]
With cold-blooded calculation, Zionists concluded that given the objectives of their ideology, Arabs would naturally never accept to simply hand their land over and will inevitably resist the oppression and occupation by alien settlers. Jabotinsky saw one and only way of achieving Zionist goals: forcibly expropriating the land:
Zionist colonization, even the most restricted, must either be terminated or carried out in defiance of the will of the native population. This colonization can, therefore, continue and develop only under the protection of a force independent of the local population – an iron wall which the native population cannot break through. This is, in toto, our policy towards the Arabs. To formulate it any other way would only be hypocrisy,
Jabotinsky wrote that in a fiendish article first published in 1923.
Jabotinsky, with a kind of sordid shrewdness decided therefore that hope shouldn’t be allowed if the Zionist project is to be achieved successfully:
Every indigenous people will resist alien settlers as long as they see an hope of ridding themselves of the danger of foreign settlement. That is what the Arabs in Palestine are doing, and what they will persist in doing as long as there remains a solitary spark of hope that they will be able to prevent the transformation of “Palestine” into the “Land of Israel”.
And the murderous, terrorist offensive on the people of Gaza should be interpreted in this context.
This is the “psychology of the thief,” in which the offender, fearful of retribution, instead of recognizing his crime, persists in his depravity; a kind of fuite-en-avant (a forward escape), creating a methodical and unremitting system of oppression aimed at killing hope (when he doesn’t simply kill lives.)
Jabotinsky later confirms his Machiavellian scheme:
As long as there is a spark of hope that they can get rid of us, they will not sell these hopes, not for any kind of sweet words or tasty morsels, because they are not a rabble but a nation, perhaps somewhat tattered, but still living. A living people makes such enormous concessions on such fateful questions only when there is no hope left. Only when not a single breach is visible in the iron wall, only then do extreme groups lose their sway, and influence transfers to moderate groups. Only then would these moderate groups come to us with proposals for mutual concessions. And only then will moderates offer suggestions for compromise on practical questions like a guarantee against expulsion, or equality and national autonomy.
But Jabotinsky and his likes, failed to imagine a world like the one we’re living in today; a world where public opinion, the street, ordinary people, are able to gather in solidarity and to get the information instantly and independently. Thanks to the information revolution, war crimes, calculated genocides, crimes against humanity and against history wouldn’t go unnoticed. The world is watching and the Palestinians wont be let down. Israel’s desperate attempts to impose its own bloody “realities” on the ground are only revealing its real nature to the World: a racist, fascistic entity, incompatible with the modern world.
